Items play an important role in Chained Echoes. Because your levels are strictly controlled by the number of Grimoire Shards you've collected, you can't count on stat boosts to improve your characters too much at any one time. This places a greater emphasis on collecting high-grade gear that you keep upgraded, and in order to do that you'll need to collect both Materials and Loot.
There are many different types of Materials and Loot in Chained Echoes. They can be collected in a few different ways:
- Defeating enemies
- Stealing from enemies
- Purchasing them from merchants (Materials only)
- Picking up orbs on the map (Loot only)
- Finding them in treasure chests
Materials are used to upgrade your items while interacting with an anvil. Loot, on the other hand, is sold to merchants, and can unlock Deals that will yield more powerful pieces of equipment and other useful items. Both are important to your journey through Chained Echoes.
This guide covers the many Materials of Chained Echoes, and where you can find each of them. They are arranged in alphabetical order, though given the sheer among of Materials and Loot available in the game you may want to use the Find function on your device to jump right where you need to go.
There are a few things to note about the items listed below:
- Loot appearing as golden orbs are locked to a single area, and are almost always found outdoors. These golden orbs are randomized, so you can't predict what you'll pick up each time, though they regenerate whenever you leave the screen and reenter, making collection pretty simple. Lists of these items will be included at the end of this guide.
- Entries tied to merchants are of a limited quantity, usually no more than five per item. The merchants do not restock, so if you've already purchased all of a merchant's wares then there's no point checking them again.
- Entries for merchants do not (currently) include locations that you'll only visit once, such as Marylea. Once I make a second pass through the game I'll include limited-time merchants as well, though they're of no use to you later on.
- All of the merchants in New Wyrnshire's Black Market carry the same items as one another. It's one of the best places in the game to pick up late-game Materials if you've got lots of money to spend.
