Main Walkthrough

Article is under heavy, ongoing construction.

Located northwest of Cortondo, which very well may be your first destination after completing the introductory sections of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, West Province (Area One) is a strict compromise between grassy plains and mountainous terrain. You'll spend a lot of time navigating rocky inclines in this part of Paldea - and you may do so early on, as it's a good choice for trainers who are just starting out.

To reach West Province (Area One) you'll need to travel west of Mesagoza, through Cortondo, and up a hill just outside Cortondo.

Areas of Interest
  • Far to the south in West Province (Area One) is a narrow path adjoining some brown lowlands. Follow it far enough and you'll wind up in South Province (Area Four).
  • South of the southern Pokémon Center is a long path. At the end of it is Alfornada Cavern, which leads to the town of Alfornada. The Pokémon inside are around level 40 on average, making this a very dangerous place if you're on par with the battles in West Province (Area One).
  • Alongside the road into Alfornada Cavern is a steep cliff which, surprisingly, you can drop down if you're on your mount. At the bottom you'll find a cavern that leads to South Province (Area Four). You can also reach this area by taking the winding trails that lead along the west side of West Province (Area One), but this path is longer. There's an ominous black stake inside this lower cave.
  • Before you reach the second Pokémon Center you'll see a mountain to the north, past the windmills. There's a Titan flying up here and tossing boulders. Defeating it is part of the Search for the Open Sky Titan quest.
  • Up a hill to the south of the second Pokémon Center you'll find a set of ruins with Pokémon not found elsewhere in the region. Also here is the region's watchtower.
  • In the northeast of the region you'll come to a barricade kept up by a Team Star Base that you can take down. Past it is Cascarrafa, the fourth stop on your gym journey.

Items and NPCs of Note
  • A ways up the path out of Cortondo you'll run into a picknicker who will give you a bundle of Ingredients for making sandwiches. She'll also fully restore your Pokémon. There's another suck picnicker in the north of the route, not long after you reach the southern Pokémon Center.
  • As you follow the path out of Cortondo and through this area you'll run alongside a ridge overlooking the town. TM 049 Sunny Day is along this ridge.
  • Along the thin southbound path leading to South Province (Area Four) you'll find TM 090 Spikes. Just north of it are a Hard Stone and a Rare Bone, appearing as golden gleams in the grass. Along this same path is a clearing to the west, at the end of which you'll find TM 047 Endure.
  • If you trek east through the area, on the ridge overlooking South Province (Area Two), you'll find a number of items, including two Rare Bones.
  • Follow the path towards the Pokémon Center and you'll find a Rare Bone on the right side of the path as you climb the final hill to your destination. On a ridge almost directly south of the Pokémon Center you'll find TM 072 Electro Ball. East of the Pokémon Center is a path leading south, and you'll find TM 008 Fire Fang at the end. If you follow a thin pathway northeast of the Pokémon Center you'll find a waterfall, and sitting at the end of the path is a Max Ether.
  • Near the Pokémon Center is a crossroads that leads north aTM 0nd south. South of the crossroads you'll find a long path that splits in two. On the upper path you'll find a Rare Bone and TM 030 Snarl. The lower path leads to Alfornada Cavern. Next to this lower path is a very steep drop that you can handle if you're on your mount. At the bottom you'll find TM 044 Dragon Tail and a Rare Bone.
  • If you go through the cave leading to South Province (Area Four) you'll find TM 035 Mud Shot. It's on the lower level of the cave, near the West Province (Area One) entrance.
  • There are five windmills roughly halfway through the area, and they stick out like a sore thumb when you go far enough north. Atop the first with stairs you'll find a Rare Candy. The next, across a small bridge and on your right, has a Thunder Stone at its top. The last windmill to the the east has TM 113 Tailwind at its peak.
  • If you climb up to the Titan's cave, then drop down the mountain to the north, you'll find a Rare Candy on a lower ledge. Below this is a larger clearing where you'l find a Max Elixir and TM 061 Shadow Claw. Carry on down one more (much smaller) ledge to find a Nugget, as well as a way off the mountain.
  • Standing at the northern Pokémon Center in the area is a Pokémon League rep. He'll give you a Clear Amulet if you win nine trainer battles in West Province (Area One).
  • On the way to the ruins / watchtower, up a hill to the south of the northern Pokémon Center, you'll find a Rare Bone. In the ruins themselves you'll find two Elixirs and a PP Up, and north of the ruins, on the edge of a cliff, you'll find TM 029 Hex. Atop a ridge to the west of the ruins you'll find a Max Revive.
  • Just south of the watchtower is a winding path leading you to a higher elevation. Along the way you can find an Elixir, an Iron, and a Sun Stone on a side path. The path will bring you up near the windmills, and if you look down a cliff on your left you'll find 036 Rock Tomb.
  • Later in the game, while you're traveling through West Province (Area Three), you can find a chunk of land in the southwest of the region that technically belongs to West Province (Area One). You'll find a Dusk Stone and TM 055 Dig sitting in this small plot of land.

Trainers

Yeray the Student
  • Fletchling, level 14
Location: On the hill leading into the area from Cortondo
Reward: 728 P

Swift, but frail. A Rock-type move will demolish Fletchling.

Aroa the Student
  • Shuppet, level 14
Location: Along the main path out of Cortondo
Reward: 728 P

A Pint-sized Ghost-type. No problem.

Neizan the Student
  • Venonat, level 14
Location: Along the main path out of Cortondo
Reward: 448 P

A Bug- and Poison-type. Venonat can cause damage, but you should be able to flatten it pretty easily.

Esteban the Black Belt
  • Riolu, level 14
Location: Just east of the main path through the area, near the entry hill from Cortondo
Reward: 840 P

A simple Fighting-type. Not a big deal.

Candina the Model
  • Oinkologne, level 20
  • Luxio, level 20
Location: Near the windmills in the northern half of the area, just before you descend towards the northern Pokémon Center
Reward: 3,200 P

One of the toughest trainers on the route. Oinkologne will batter your team with Iron Head, while Luxio will burn you with Fire Fang or paralyze you with Thunder Fang, depending on your Pokémon. Fighting-type moves work on Oinkologne, while Ground-type moves will take out Luxio.

Elena the Student
  • Mareep, level 14
Location: On the wide, grassy path that leads east to South Province (Area Two)
Reward: 840 P

Pretty standard Electric-type, and slow to boot. You'll be fine.

Backpacker Asier
  • Foongus, level 14
Location: At the bottom of the hill leading to the southern Pokémon Center
Reward: 840 P

A pint-sized poisoner, and not much else.

Youngster Tristan
  • Salandit, level 17
Location: On the long path to the south of the southern Pokémon Center
Reward: 748 P

A Poison- and Fire-type? Ground-type moves will demolish this thing.

Nicolas the Scientist
  • Ditto, level 17
Location: On the long path to the south of the southern Pokémon Center
Reward: 1,564 P

Ditto is potentially as tough as your own Pokémon, but you can take advantage of its Normal-typing before it transforms and annihilate it with a Fighting-type.

Leo the Student
  • Pincurchin, level 17
Location: On the long path to the south of the southern Pokémon Center
Reward: 748 P

A tiny ELectric-type that won't cause you much trouble. Just too weak.

Cabbie Oriol
  • Corvisquire, level 20
  • Squawkabilly, level 20
Location: On the long path to the south of the southern Pokémon Center
Reward: 3,200 P

Tougher than most trainers on this route, but not by a ton. Corvisquire will try to steal berries with Pluck, while Squawkabilly will Taunt you to prevent the use of status moves. Neither tactic is especially useful, and since both Pokémon are Flying-types you can probably clip their wings with a single combatant.

Backpacker Mateo
  • Eevee, level 15
Location: On the long slope leading down to the northern Pokémon Center
Reward: 900 P

Normal-type. Cute, but easy to defeat.

Yasmin the Student
  • Teddiursa, level 16
  • Tinkatink, level 16
Location: On the long slope leading down to the northern Pokémon Center
Reward: 512 P

Teddiursa is a pretty standard Normal-type. Nothing to fear. Tinkatink is a more durable Fairy- and Steel-type, resisting the normal Fairy-type weaknesses, though a hearty dose of Fire will do it in nicely.

Nuria the Student
  • Dunsparce, level 16
Location: Up a hill to the south of the northern Pokémon Center, on the way to a set of ruins
Reward: 960 P

A Dunsparce? Normal-type. Glare can be annoying since it paralyzes, but aside from that this weird worm has no significant weapons.

Adam the Courier
  • Cufant, level 16
Location: By the ruins, up a hill to the south of the northern Pokémon Center
Reward: 1,472 P

Pretty standard Steel-type. Ground-, Fighting-, and Fire-type moves will mash the poor thing.

Alfredo the Student
  • Magikarp, level 16
  • Arrokuda, level 16
Location: On the road just outside Cascarrafa
Reward: 960 P

Magikarp isn't even worth mentioning, while Arrokuda is a fairly unremarkable (though far more capable) Water-type. Meh.
