Part 31: Frost Cavern

Main Walkthrough

Route 17: Mamoswine Road Pokémon

  • Abomasnow - Rare, Walking
  • Delibird - Common, Walking
  • Sneasel - Uncommon, Walking
  • Snover - Uncommon, Walking
Now that you've finished up with Dendemille Town your path leads east, to the next Pokémon League Gym in Anistar City. First, though, you'll need to wade through the deep snows of Route 17, and you'll need a Mamoswine to get the job done. Chasing Team Flare out of Frost Cavern put the big Pokémon back on the trail.

Take the southeastern exit out of Dendemille Town to find Route 17. A Mamoswine is waiting, similar to the Rhyhorn much earlier in the game, and on its back you can move through the deep snow to the south of the gate. You'll run into Pokémon as you explore the snow, so have a good Fighting- or Fire-type Pokémon ready to fight. Mamoswine can smash through rocks, just like Rhyhorn, so there will be some side diversions on your way to the end of Route 17 as we explore every inch of the path.

Make your way east as soon as you enter the snow. Bash through the rocks directly ahead as well as the rocks in the small clearing ahead, then dismount your Mamoswine. Make your way north and, after a few dead ends, you'll find an Icicle Plate. Check the north-most dead end for a hidden Timer Ball, as well. If you take out the rock to your right where you dismounted the Mamoswine you'll find a battle with a Sky Trainer down the eastbound trail.

Sky Trainer Anila

  • Rotom, level 42
  • Butterfree, level 44
Reward: 4,400 P

As part Electric-type, Rotom can be very dangerous, and should be wiped out immediately. Butterfree is annoying, but given that it's also a Bug-type you shouldn't have any trouble finishing the fight once Rotom is gone.

Head back to the Mamoswine and hop aboard. Wade back into the snow and go south. You'll see more rocks along the southern wall. Bash through these as well, including one more beyond, to find a small maze. On the left side of the maze you'll find a Calcium.

Head eastward when you're back on the Mamoswine. Follow the path to the end of the snow field. Dismount and approach the gate, checking beside it to find a hidden Paralyze Heal, then head north. You'll find a Rare Candy on the edge of a cliff. That's the last of your pries on this Route, so head through the gate to Anistar City.

Anistar City

Just inside the city limits you'll be stopped by Sina, one of Sycamore's assistants, who will give you ten Repeat Balls. Once she's gone you can do some exploring, though we'll check out the Pokémon Center first. An important NPC is inside.

Hex Maniac TMs

Inside the Pokémon Center is a Hex Maniac. Speak to her and she will give you a TM a day, depending on what time of day you visit her. Below is a list of what she'll give you.
  • Morning (4 am - 11 am) - TM32 Double Team
  • Afternoon (11 am - 6 pm) - TM35 Flamethrower
  • Evening (6 pm - 8 pm) - TM77 Psych Up
  • Late Night (8 pm - 4 am) - TM90 Substitute
Note that you can manipulate your system's time to get these TMs. The Hex Maniac doesn't seem to care that you're cheating.
  • In addition to the Hex Maniac you'll find Mr. Bonding in the Pokémon Center, and he'll give you the Exp. Point O-Power. Also here is a Poké Mart vendor with several powerful TMs for sale, namely Blizzard, Thunder, Fire Blast, Focus Blast, and Hyper Beam. Fire Blast and Focus Blast are both good for the upcoming gym, if you don't have any better options.
  • Outside the Pokémon Center is the Memory Girl. She can tell you the memories of your Pokémon. Not very helpful, but neat.
  • To the right of the Pokémon Center is a clothing store. Ooo la la.
  • Next to the clothing store is a house. The guy in here will give you TM10 Hidden Power. He'll also tell you what kind of move Hidden Power will be for each of your Pokémon. Back outside, you can find a hidden Super Repel at the entrance of the alley between this house and the clothing shop.
  • The next house to the north has the legendary Pokémon expert mentioned by Sina when you entered the city.
  • There's a lonely old man in the next house to the north. He wants to look after one of your Pokémon, so long as it's below level five. Hand it over and come back after you've defeated the Champion. The Pokémon will be there, along with a letter and a Comet Shard. Kinda sad, that.
  • To the west of the old man's house is the leadup to the Anistar Sundial. Check the bush directly to the right of the massive crystal artifact to find a Sun Stone. Not much else you can do here other than get your picture taken. Check the southern line of bushes near the other entrance to the Sundial to find a Pretty Wing.
  • At the end of the street, near the gym, is a café. It's another place where you can pay to speak to people with Pokémon that may not be in your Pokédex at this point.
After healing up, approach the Pokémon Gym. Your neighbor will show up and attack. Check the balcony to the right of the Gym after the battle to find a hidden Escape Rope.

Pokémon Trainer Calem / Serena
  • Meowstic, level 44
  • Vaporeon / Flareon / Jolteon, level 44
  • Absol, level 44
  • Chesnaught / Delphox / Greninja, level 46
Reward: 4,600 P

You've fought this trainer before, and you're fighting them again. Your strategies shouldn't change too much from previous fights, and there's a good chance your neighbor hasn't kept up in levels very well compared to your current team. The only new addition is an Eeveevolution, based on your starter (Vaporeon if you chose Froakie, Flareon if you chose Fennekin, and Jolteon if you chose Chespin), which will largely stick to its elemental attacks - and, in Vaporeon's case, Ice-type moves as well.

Your rival will heal your team up once the battle is over, and with your neighbor out of the way you can challenge the Anistar City Gym.
