Part 9: Castelia City

Main Walkthrough

Castelia Sewers Pokémon

  • Grimer - Rare (but not when traveling with Hugh), Walking, All Seasons
  • Rattata - Common, Walking, All Seasons
  • Zubat - Common, Walking, All Seasons
Make your way to Thumb Pier once you're done looking around Castelia City. So long as you checked out Castelia Gym first Iris will be waiting on the streets, and she'll point out Castelia's sewer system. Hugh will run up and decide that the Castelia Sewers are the only possible place Team Plasma could still be hiding. Follow him into the Sewers and, when you agree to his conditions, the two of you will temporarily team up. Any time you get into a Pokémon battle, it will be a double battle - and Hugh will automatically heal your Pokémon at the end of these battles. It's a great setup for easy leveling, though Hugh makes catching Pokémon difficult.

The layout of the Sewers changes from season to season. Depending on when you play, the water levels may be high or they may be non-existent. The presence of waters will block some areas and grant access to others. You'll get the most out of Castelia Sewers during Autumn and Winter for the moment, which is how we'll proceed for now - though if you come back here during Spring and Summer with Surf you'll find a lot more. We'll cover the Surf-able areas at the bottom of the article.

Head down into the culvert and take the lower stairs back up to ground level. (Team Plasma is up the northern stairs. You should hunt around with Hugh for a while first, unless you really don't carry about the Sewer's many items and trainers.) Go south from the fellow who won't let you pass and enter the culvert again. Go up the stairs on your left and you'll find an X Sp. Def.

Get back in the culvert and take a left. Wander west, then go north when the path branches off. Ignore the first set of stairs you see and go for the second, further to the north. You'll find a Scientist who's ready to fight.

Scientist Caroline
  • Grimer, level 17
Reward: 816 P

The room beside Caroline is currently empty, and it appears that it will always be empty. Ah well. Return to the culvert and go back south. Head up the stairs you skipped earlier to get into another fight.

Worker Zack
  • Drilbur, level 17
Reward: 680 P

Go north from the Worker and head east. You'll find a doctor who will challenge you if you speak to him.

Doctor Heath
  • Sewaddle, level 17
Reward: 1,020 P

Heath will likely be the first Doctor you encounter. For future reference, any time you beat a Doctor they will serve as a mobile Pokémon Center, healing your team whenever you talk to them. Handy. Check to the right of Heath for Leftovers, then go through the nearby door. Inside is a Scientist who will give you either a Potion, a Super Potion, or a Revive each day. Hardly worth making the trip in here.

The Scientist's room is a dead end, so head back the way you came until you're just south of the guy who blocks your progress.

Janitor Felix
  • Lillipup, level 16
  • Trubbish, level 16
Reward: 640 P

Carry on south from the janitor and you'll find another culvert you can dip down into. Follow this path west to find a set of stairs; go up them and you'll be facing a Worker. Check to the right of him and you'll find a Pearl, obscured by the wall.

Worker Scott
  • Timburr, level 17
Reward: 640 P

That's as far as you can go in Castelia Sewers for now. Backtrack to the beginning of the sewer, where you may have seen a pair of Team Plasma Grunts looking at each other. To the left of them is a TwistedSpoon. Snag it, then talk to the Grunts. They aren't in the mood to talk, especially with Hugh being so hostile, and the Grunts will attack.

Team Plasma Grunt and Team Plasma Grunt
  • Scraggy, level 16
  • Sandile, level 16
Reward: 1,280 P

Thwomp the Grunts and they'll vamoose. You'll then be approached by Burgh, Castelia's gym leader, who will assure you that Team Plasma's nowhere else to be found in the Sewers. Hugh, thankful, will give you HM04 Strength and leave the Sewers. You're then confronted by an odd-looking Scientist who compliments your battles skills... and takes off. Weirdo.

Burgh will leave, offering as he goes to fight you at his gym. You have a few options:
  • Train in the sewers. Not the best place, but it has a decent assortment of Pokémon to catch now that Hugh is gone.
  • Explore the Relic Passage to the north of where you fought the Grunts, through the broken wall. There are more Pokémon to snag and trainers to battle inside, though you can't access the bulk of this area from here. More on the Relic Passage in another article.
  • Check out Castelia Park. Return to the man who wouldn't let you pass by earlier. He's gone, and there's a clear path up to Castelia Park. This area is noteworthy enough, and helpful to your future explorations, that it will be the next part of this walkthrough.
  • Fight Burgh. More on that in Part 12 of the walkthrough.
Regardless of which path you choose, you should consider going back to the Pokémon Center and giving your team a break. With Hugh gone you don't get free healing anymore. Boo.

Return Trip

Come back through Castelia Sewers once you can Surf - and during either the Spring or Summer - and you'll find more items of note:
  • Just west of the Relic Passage entrance you'll find a Heart Scale on the other side of a floating plank of water.
  • Head south from Relic Passage and you'll find another floating plank of water leading to an X Special.
  • Surf south of the X Special and you can hop out of the water. Check just south of the landing point to find a hidden Max Repel. Head west along this path and Surf another patch of water west to find some Black Sludge.
  • Surf west down the primary southern culvert and you can jump out of the water and onto a floating plank of wood. Head southwest to find a hidden HP Up. Surf southeast from the plank to the next patch of land to find a hidden Poison Gem.
  • Jump into the water to the south of the Poison Gem and sail east. TM41 Torment is down here, as well as a patrolling trainer.
Scientist Clarke
  • Magnemite, level 17
Reward: 816 P

  • Make your way to the northwest area of the Sewers. A raised wooden plank will allow you to get at a Rare Bone. Sail west from the plank to reach a north-south concrete path. Look to the south for a hidden Ultra Ball. To the north you'll find a patrolling trainer, as well as a room containing a Scientist. Like the previous Scientist this one will give you an item once per day: an Antidote, a Full Heal, or a Full Restore.
Janitor Brady
  • Marill, level 31
  • Cinccino, level 31
Reward: 1,240 P
