The fifth and final chapter of Osvald's tale takes place in Gravell, a remote town in the north of the Wildlands. Gravell is far from any location Osvald has previously visited, and to reach it you'll need to use a ship to reach the Crackridge Harbor: Anchorage. Follow the trails north of here until you reach the Western Gravell Wilds. Gravell is on the east side of the route.

You'll be prmpted to begin the chapter when you enter Gravell, assuming Osvald is in your party. If he's not, or if you'd rather wait until later, you can trigger the scenario by heading to the Tavern and choosing Hear a Tale from the Tavern Keeper's menu. Gravell is down a set of stairs on the south side of the main road through the town.

Drawn to Gravell to retrieve his daughter from the care of the vile Harvey, Osvald arrives just in time to witness a disturbance. Apparently some worshipers are losing their minds. Head east, to the Path to the Duskruin Shrine, and Osvald will spot a weird, dark fog rolling over the area. It catches a nearby Villager, and you'll need to switch to night and Mug the Black Crystal off of him to return him to normal. A combination of Staff strikes and Elemental Barrage will do the trick.

Path to the Duskruin Shrine

Enemies

  • Creepy Fledgling - Weak to Dagger, Bow, Lightning - Drop / Steal Healing Grape (M)
  • Dreadwing - Weak to Polearm, Bow, Lightning - Drop / Steal Pomegranate Leaf
  • Fire Elemental - Weak to Fire, Dark - Drop / Steal Almighty Soulstone
  • Killer Chameleon - Weak to Axe, Staff, Wind - Drop / Steal Sticky Flower
  • Wild Moleking I - Weak to Dagger, Staff, Ice - Drop / Steal Healing Grape (M)
  • Wild Moleking II - Weak to Sword, Polearm, Ice, Wind - Drop / Steal Plum Leaf
  • Wild Moleking III - Weak to Axe, Staff, Ice - Drop / Steal Inspiriting Plum (M)

Time to save some folks. Head east of the save point and you'll find some stairs to the north. Go up them to discover a chest containing a Healing Grape Bunch. Further east of here you'll find a small roundabout, and there will be a Laborer to Mug for a Black Crystal. Look north of the Laborer and you'll see a thin pathway through the rock wall. Go through it and take a right at the end to find a hidden passage to a chest. The chest contains an Antique Coat.

Head back to the roundabout and go up the stairs on the right. There are two more Villagers whom you need to Mug for their Black Crystals. Further up the stairs is an Adherent, and you'll also have to Mug him for his Black Crystal. The Adherent is more powerful than the rest of the villagers, and if you're having trouble with him you may want to turn Osvald into a Thief to exploit his Sword and Dagger weaknesses. Elemental Barrage can also work on its own if you get lucky.

Save everyone and the Adherent will explain what happened. He'll point you east, towards the Duskruin Shrine. Take the side path along the way to find a chest containing an Energizing Pomegranate (M), then enter the ruins.

  • Carnivorous Bat - Weak to Polearm, Bow, Ice, Light - Drop / Steal Inspiriting Plum
  • Creepy Fledgling - Weak to Dagger, Bow, Lightning - Drop / Steal Healing Grape (M)
  • Dreadwing - Weak to Polearm, Bow, Lightning - Drop / Steal Pomegranate Leaf

  • Wild Moleking II - Weak to Sword, Polearm, Ice, Wind - Drop / Steal Plum Leaf

A short way into the shrine you'll come to a save point. If you look southwest of the save point you'll find a little side path that will lead you to a chest. The chest contains an Olive of Life (L). To the southeast you'll see a beam of light illuminating the path forward, and if you look to the left of the beam you'll find a torchlit ladder. Go down, north, and behind the rocks on your right to find a chest containing a Critical Necklace.

Return to the main path, heading south and then east. You'll come to a rounded staircase, and partway down it is a circular building. Dip through the door on your left to find a chest containing an Ice Soulstone (L). At the bottom of the stairs the path splits, and if you go right you'll find your way down to a chest containing 25,000 leaves. Take a left at the split and you'll find your way to the next section of the ruins.

Duskruin Shrine: Depths

You'll come to a long, northbound bridge a short way into this route. Check to the right of the bridge to find a chest containing an Empowering Lychee (L), then head north. Take a right when you reach the other side of the bridge and you'll find a side path leading to a chest that contains an Abyssal Rod.

The remaining path leads north, where you'll find a chest containing a Healing Grape Bunch. You'll also come to another bridge, and there's a save point beside the bridge. Heal up, save, and head north. Before you reach the end of the bridge, though, check on your right to find one last chest, this containing a Shadow Soulstone (L). Then steel yourself for the final confrontation with Harvey.

Small Golem

Shields: 6
Weakness: Axe, Fire, Ice, Light
Drop: Shadow Soulstone (L)
Steal: Shadow Soulstone (L)

First up, some unfamiliar mooks. Despite looking like the Remnants you fought on your way through the Duskruin Shrine, these Small Golems are a fair bit stronger... though barely bosses. Osvald can use Elemental Barrage to Break both of them without too much trouble. Harvey's not done with just them, though...

Professor Harvey

Shields: 10 (Professor Harvey) / 3 (Pure Elementals)
Weakness:
  • Polearm, Axe, Fire, Ice, Lightning (Professor Harvey, first phase)
  • Dagger, Bow, Light, Dark (Professor Harvey, second phase)
  • Staff, Fire, Ice, Lightning, Wind, Light (Pure Elemental)
Drop: Olive of Life (L)
Steal: Olive of Life (L)

Self-proclaimed bearer of the One True Magic, Harvey will not make this battle easy on you. He knows almost every spell Osvald knows, plus a few more, and he likes to charge up his brand of Kamehamehas on a regular basis. Your Breaking skills will need to be on point to take him down. Harvey can use the following attacks:
  • A normal melee attack
  • Lecture, which can put one target to Sleep (wah wah)
  • Fireball, a Fire attack against the whole party
  • Lightning Bolt, a Lightning attack against the whole party
  • Icewind, an Ice attack against the whole party
  • Elemental Distortion, a magic attack that strikes two targets with random elements
  • Flash Steps / Demonic Flash, a buff to Harvey's critical hit rate and speed
  • Advanced Magic, which upgrades Harvey's spells to more powerful forms
  • One True Magic, a charged attack that heavily damages the whole party
  • Fire Storm, a stronger Fire attack against the whole party
  • Lightning Blast, a stronger Lightning attack against the whole party
  • Blizzard, a stronger Ice attack against the whole party
  • Concentrate Elements, a magic attack that strikes one target with three random elements
  • Waves of darkness emanate from Harvey, damaging the team as he charges an attack and sometimes inflicting Blind
  • Ultimate Magic, a charged attack that heavily damages the whole party
Harvey begins the battle with two attacks, and he will promptly summon a pair of Pure Elementals to help him out. He and the Elementals will pepper your team with a wide variety of spells, typically hitting the whole party but occasionally swapping to single targets. Harvey can attack twice per turn, so you'll see a lot of magic flying about. As this happens Harvey will frequently charge up for One True Magic, a powerful attack against your whole party. Defeat the Elementals and Harvey will summon them again.

Break and damage Harvey consistently and he'll yell at Osvald, then give himself four attacks. After this point Harvey will begin to use more powerful magic that hits twice per turn rather than once. He'll also charge up towards Ultimate Magic, a more powerful version of One True Magic, and as he does Harvey will emit waves of darkness that will both damage and Blind your party.

This fight gets very mean if you fall too far behind on your healing. Your first priority is to get rid of the Pure Elementals whenever they're sumoned. Osvald is great at this, though if he's busy dealing with Harvey you can also enlist your other party members. If you've got other Scholars then you're more than equipped to deal with the Pure Elements, though you can also use Soulstones to quickly demolish their HP and get rid of them. You must destroy the Pure Elementals before Harvey gets to half health, as dealing with six attacks each round is way too much.

Once Harvey begins using his more powerful magic simply healing will not be enough, and you need to Break him. Doing so during the first round is pretty easy, thanks to Elemental Barrage, but when Harvey changes his weaknesses that's no longer an option. Your best bets will be Thieves with HP Steal or Hunters with Precise Shot. Put these Jobs on speedy characters who can outrun Harvey and they should Break him before he gets in too many attacks. Then just beat Harvey down until he crumples. If you find Harvey is getting in too many attacks then use Skills to nullify his speed buff from Demonic Flash, which will make the battle quite a bit easier.

During this battle Osvald will learn the One True Magic EX Skill. This is a powerful attack that removes shields from every enemy, regardless of their weaknesses, while inflicting heavy damage. This is a good tool for getting rid of the Pure Elementals early on, but you'll likely find it less useful for dealing with Harvey himself, given its high SP cost. Stick to Elemental Barrage to maximize Osvald's damage.

Defeating Harvey will put him down for good, and in the aftermath you'll need to manually Scrutinize someone. Osvald's tale concludes a little more optimistically than might be expected, and when all is said and done you'll be returned to your journey. If you chose Oswald as your starting character you can, from this point on, remove him from the active party at any Tavern. Story complete!
