Ryu, Rei, and Teepo are still on the hunt for food, and a chance meeting with the woodsman Bunyan has given them a new target: Bunyan's cabin, not far from their own in the Cedar Woods. There's not a whole lot else to see in the Yraall Region right now, so you'd best head towards home and look into some burglaring.

Bunyan's home is in the southeast of the first screen of the Cedar Woods, and if you enter the woods from the east side you'll only be facing a quick walk to the southeast to reach his front door. You'll find the door locked, however, which brings up another mechanic: Field Actions.

Field Actions

As you explore the world of Breath of Fire III you'll occasionally run into obstructions on the map that you can't bypass without some sort of action from a party member. These are dealt with via Field Actions. Executed by using the O button, Field Actions vary depending on who is leading the party:

  • Ryu swings his sword, and can chop down bushes or hit people, occasionally receiving small amounts of zenny in the process
  • Rei can unlock locked doors
  • Teepo can kick trees or rocks, and if Teepo gets a bit of a run-up any rocks he kicks will travel further

You can cycle through the party member lineup via the L button. The party composition on the field does not affect your arrangement in battle, for Formation purposes.

Put Rei in front and have him inspect Bunyan's home. He'll unlock the door, allowing the boys to explore Bunyan's cabin. Climb down to the lower level of Bunyan's home, via the ladder in the upper corner of the hut, and you'll find a cabinet. Inside it is Beef Jerky... though filching it will get the group in trouble. Shocking.

Once everyone has been snagged by Bunyan he will send Rei off alone to deal with... something... on Mt. Glaus, a nearby mountain. Ryu and Teepo, meanwhile, need to cut wood for Bunyan. Teepo will set a log down, and Ryu will need to cut it before it falls over. Wait about a second after Teepo sets the log down before swinging Ryu's sword (O button) and you should have no trouble slicing through the log. Keep doing this until Bunyan is satisfied with your work and lets the pair go.

You now need to follow Rei to Mt. Glaus. Before you head there, though, you should make a return trip to McNeil. You've likely earned enough zenny to afford some better equipment. At a minimum you should buy Bracers and Bandanas for Ryu and Teepo, and Ballock Knives aren't a bad idea if you can afford a pair. Anything above and beyond these items will make Mt. Glaus a cakewalk.

Follow the northern road to the northwest from McNeil. Before you reach Mt. Glaus, northwest of Cedar Woods, you'll hit a question mark on the map.

This tiny area is really just a stepping-stone to your destination, and you can skip it almost entirely if you wish. Head northeast from the entrance, cross the bridge over the water, go a little ways east, then follow the grass to the northwest. You'll wind up back on the road to the exit in no time. There are a few things to collect along the way before you go too far, however:

  • Near the bridge by the entrance is a huge boulder that's being held up by a rock. Put Teepo in the front of the party and he can kick the rock out of the way, pushing the boulder into the water and cutting off the source of the stream. You can then enter the emptied riverbed and walk southeast to find a side path. It leads to a chest containing a Weather Vane.
  • In roughly the middle of this area, as you head north, you'll see a rock sitting by itself. Kick it out of the way with Teepo and you'll find a hole. Inside the hole is a Vitamin.
  • Southeast of the exit to Mt. Glaus is a chest behind a tree. The chest contains 80 zenny. A short distance west of the chest is a rock that Teepo can boot out of the way to find a hole. In the hole you'll find a Coin.

As you explore this area you'll run into the occasional Man Trap. These big, gruesome plants are much more dangerous than anything else in the area, since they can put your party to sleep. Eliminate any other enemies first, then use Teepo's fiery Abilities (Flare and Simoon) to do substantial harm to the Man Trap, since they start off napping and won't wake up until they take damage.

Once you leave this area you'll be back on the world map, near the foot of Mt. Glaus. You won't need to cross through that area again to reach Mt. Glaus. If either of your characters got knocked out you should head back to McNeil to fully restore their maximum HP, and you can also go there to spend any money you earned during the trip.

Ready to go? Then head to Mt. Glaus. This will be the first test of your abilities in Breath of Fire III.
