Part 39: Route 11

Main Walkthrough

After a bit of a dry spell you've finally hit another settlement with a Pokémon Gym. This is Opelucid City, home of Dragon-types, and it's one of the more important locations in the game. You'll be greeted by Iris as soon as you hit the city, and she'll talk a bit about what you'll face before rushing away. She does that.

(Note that Opelucid City looks different depending on your version of the game. In Black 2 it's rather futuristic-looking, while in White 2 the city has a brick-based, classical feel. The differences are skin-deep only.)

You can challenge the Opelucid Gym right now, if you wish, but doing so successfully will lock you into a lengthy sequence of events that will block off a great deal of Opelucid City. We'd best have a look around first.

  • Head north along the road to the right of the Pokémon Center and you'll find a small tower. On the second floor is a man who's obsessed with Tympoles. Show him a Tympole and his existing group will share a tune with you. You can only get Tympoles in Black 2 and White 2 by breeding or trading, so unless you've already decided to fill up your Pokédex this little mission probably isn't worth your time.
  • A little further north is another building. On the second floor is a table full of mimickers. Speak to the northernmost child and he'll ask you to pick out the kid that says the same thing he does. You don't get anything for playing along.
  • Next to Opelucid Gym is a home. Speak to the woman on the bottom floor and she'll give you a Smoke Ball. (Despite the name, Smoke Balls are held items.)
  • On the west side of Opelucid City is a building full of people who like Props. The old man on the ground floor will give you one Prop per day, in this order: Gift Box, Fluffy Beard, Big Bag, and Scarlet Hat.
  • Right in the middle of Opelucid City is the home of Drayden, the gym leader. Speak to the football player on the second floor for a Float STone, and the girl across from him for a Ring Target.

Opelucid City becomes much more interesting once you've completed the gym. First, though, we should heed Iris' advice and have a look at Route 9, located to the west of Opelucid City.

Continuing the trend of a straightforward trip, Route 9 is another direct east-to-west road. Most of the items of interest are on the sides of the road, starting with the trainers. Aside from one, who is on a grassy plot on the south side of the road, all of them are loitering on or beside the road. You'll encounter them in this order:

Roughneck Chance

  • Scraggy, level 43
Reward: 1,032 P

Roughneck Reese

  • Krokorok, level 43
Reward: 1,032 P

Biker Zeke

  • Pawniard, level 43
Reward: 1,376 P

Biker Philip

  • Skorupi, level 43
Reward: 1,032 P

Hooligans Jim & Cas

  • Krookodile, level 42
  • Drapion, level 42
Reward: 2,688 P

The trainers aside, there are a few things to see along Route 9:
  • In the grass south of the Opelucid City exit you'll find an Elixir. It's in the bottom-right corner of the grass.
  • Weave through the grass as you head west and you'll find stairs. These lead down to a dungeon that no longer exists. Alas. Sitting in front of the rubble is an Iron. There's also a Dark Gem near here, back up the stairs and in the grass on your right. Look behind the trees to the west of the Hooligan to find a partially-hidden Nugget.
  • Sitting beside the patrol route of one of the Bikers is a Quick Ball.
  • Sitting in front of the two Hooligans is an HP Up.
  • Just west of the entrance to Shopping Mall Nine, the major building in this area, is a Hidden Grotto in the trees. If you approach the Hidden Grotto with the Dropped Item from Nimbasa City in your inventory you'll receive an Xtransceiver call, as well.

One of the major reasons to come to Route 9 is Shopping Mall Nine, on the north side of the road. This commercial hub contains a ton of shops on its three floors that sell a ton of different items, including restorative potions, TMs, just about every type of Poké Ball in the game, and, most importantly, Vitamins. If you're interested in EV training your team and have a lot of cash to spare, you'll probably frequent Shopping Mall Nine.

In addition to purchases you can find two trainers in Shopping Mall Nine - The Waitress on the first floor and the Waiter on the third floor - and a Poké Doll in the storage room on the first floor.

Waitress Flo
  • Minccino, level 43
Reward: 1,720 P

Waiter Lou
  • Liepard, level 43
Reward: 1,720 P

At the west end of Route 9 is Tubeline Bridge. It is currently closed, however, and you won't be able to go through the section of Unova beyond until you've beaten the game. Back to Opelucid City with you.
