Civilization: Beyond Earth Walkthrough Listing

Civilization: Beyond Earth has ditched the planet Earth for some pretty compelling reasons, but, understandably, the folks who went forth unto the stars feel some affinity for their home planet. In the Emancipation Victory this is taken to the extreme when, in a bid to free Earth from tyranny, you must construct a Warp Gate to zip back home and reconquer that which has been unjustly stolen from humanity.

Setting Up

There are a few things you should do when embarking upon the Emancipation Victory, and you’ll want to start planning towards them from your very first turn:
  • Most important, you want to work towards the Supremacy Affinity. We’ll look at that more in a bit.
  • Working alongside Supremacy, you should field a decently-sized army. This is always important for protecting against enemies during the end stage of Victories, but it’s especially important for Emancipation.
  • You’ll want to leave a space near one of your major cities open for development. You’ll have to replace an improvement otherwise, and though that’s hardly a tragedy, it can still be annoying. Make sure this space is deep within your territory, so water-bound units can’t easily reach it.

Step 1: Launch 1 Lasercom Satellite

In order to reach Earth, you must first contact Earth. This necessitates sending the Lasercom Satellite into orbit above your colony. You’ll need the following:
  • The Orbital Networks tech, a third-tier tech on the Technology Web. It’s down and to the right of the centre.
  • The Chemistry tech, a second-tier tech which allows you to spot and harvest Petroleum. You’ll need a bit of Petroleum (two units) to build a Lasercom Satellite. Chemistry is directly above the centre of the Technology Web.
  • The Engineering tech, another second-tier tech which allows you to spot and mine Titanium. You’ll need Titanium (one unit) to put together the Satellite. Engineering is down and to the left of the centre.
Once the Satellite is in orbit you’ll jump to the next step in the Victory.

Step 2: Research Hypercomputing

Pretty straightforward, though this might take a while. You’ll find Hypercomputing on the fourth tier, directly down from the centre of the Technology Web. It is, mercifully, the first tech in its grouping.

Step 3: Max Out Supremacy

Now the fun part. For much of the rest of the match you’ll have to raise your Supremacy Affinity to Level 13. Quests will occasionally do the trick for this, though much of your experience will probably come from researching various techs. Jump back and forth between both to quickly build up to Level 13. Techs you can research for Supremacy include, in roughly this order:
  • Autonomous Systems
  • Power Systems
  • Synthetic Thought
  • Climate Control
  • Collaborative Thought
  • Tactical Robotics
  • Neural Uploading
  • Geoscaping
  • Protogenetics
  • Euthenics
  • Biometallurgy
  • Autogyros
  • Alien Materials

Step 4: Build the Emancipation Gate

Once you’ve reached Level 13 in Supremacy you can construct an Emancipation Gate, which serves as a warp point back to Earth. The Emancipation Gate is a Planetary Wonder that takes a long time to build (the time varies according to your Pace and the Production output of your city), occupies its own hexagon on the map, is extremely vulnerable to attack, and is an absolute necessity if you want to succeed. Here are some tips for successfully maintaining an Emancipation Gate, both before and after it’s built:
  • Build away from shorelines. This is key. It’s way too easy to lose your Emancipation Gate to some stray schmuck.
  • Surround it in soldiers, and make sure a soldier is always occupying its space. Don’t let any unfriendlies anywhere near the Gate. If possible, keep it deep in your territory, far from any borders. This will also make it more difficult to locate in the first place.
  • Keep it within range of satellites. This will prevent enemies from deploying one of their own and lucking out.
  • Set yourself up in an alliance with another player. They’ll be obligated to help you in a defensive war, and you’ll be safe from at least that colony while the alliance is active.
  • Last, create extra military units near the Gate while it’s under construction. This will be crucial in the final step.
Step 5: Send Troops to Earth

Just building the Gate isn’t enough. Now that it’s operable you need to use it to shunt combat units to Earth, exactly 1,000 combat strength’s worth. Position the unit on the Gate and trigger the warp device by clicking on the Gate’s window (bottom-left corner) to send the unit away. This will add to the total amount of combat strength needed… but it will also remove that unit from your colony permanently. Don’t send units you think you’ll need to defend yourself from enemy incursions. Stronger units will yield better results in this process, but sending your best men and women through immediately is not a good idea, especially if you’re embroiled in a war. Only send your strongest units through if you’ve done the math and know their sacrifice will end the game in your favour.
